I took a fall ride to Mt. Scott through Red Rock Canyon yesterday (10-21-04) I left Yukon around 9:00 as the fog was lifting and traveled west on old highway 66 to El Reno. There I took Highway 81 south for about a mile where up ahead the road was covered with fresh oil where they were doing construction. I did a U and went back to El Reno and continued on old 66 west until it met I-40 then continued west to the Hinton exit, where I went south on 281 to Red Rock Canyon State Park.

The leaves were just turning, what a beautiful ride through the canyon. I left the park after a brief stay and needed a rest stop. I continued south on 281 through Lookeba and Binger to Anadarko, wher I fueled up. (Since it was Thursday morning I had the road pretty much to myself – nice being retired) After fueling up I continued south on 281 through Apache and Richards Spur to the Medicine park entrance. After a trip through Medicine park I drove up Mt. Scott. What a beautiful ride this time of the year. The shoemack? plants on the side of the road were fire red and the view was fantastic.

I believe I was in 3rd gear as I started up and it was doing good so I shifted to 4th, I couldn’t believe it was pulling so good so I tried 5th – I couldn’t believe it would pull the hill in 5th, but no problem – what a power house. At the top I took in the view and took a few pictures and had a guy take one of me and the bike. The ride back home was following much the same route arriving home around 4:30. What a relaxing and fantastic day.

Gary rides The Silver Thread

Highway 149N, The Silver Thread
By Gary Milburn

Lake City, Co (Editors note. Gary, once a resident of Oklahoma is now residing in Colorado where he continues to antagonize us with his wonderful pics of beautiful southern Colorado)

Today’s ride was originally intended to be a Fall Colors ride. As you will see from the shots taken, I missed it.

My take off time was delayed since I had not yet made the adjustments to my handle bars to accommodate the new IS tank. Even with some pulling back, the wire clips still hit the tank on extreme turns. Yet I digress…

*Note: I put lots of links in this writeup and they *should* open in a new window if you click them. I hope you enjoy our adventure.

Cruising the MountainsRaymond and Rhonda (W0QNX) from Wichita, KS arrived at my home on Sunday Sept. 19. Early Monday morning we loaded the bikes and headed off on a week long adventure with a very loose ride plan that pointed us in the general direction of Alamosa, CO for the night. We headed out through the panhandle of Oklahoma through Guymon, Boise City and then to Clayton, NM. A quick lunch at the DQ and we were off again heading to Raton. We made a little side trip at Capulin Volcano which is right off the highway east of Raton. It is a neat place to stop if you are ever passing through. The Volcano Rim is right at 8000ft elev. with a great view of the surrounding area. After viewing the Volcano we made our way to Raton, north on I-25 to Walsenburg where we headed west again on Hwy 160 over La Veta Pass to Alamosa. Did I mention the wind was horrible all day? 30+MPH crosswinds ALL day long. Anyway, back to the story… We arrived in Alamosa and met up with Gary for a most excellent Mexican dinner. Great food, and great company!
